R ebecca Solnit grew up in California in the 1970s, a “scrawny, unpopular, nerdy” girl who graduated early from high school and briefly lived in Paris to avoid a violent and unsupportive household. Rebecca Solnit is the author of 17 books, including an expanded hardcover version of her paperback indie bestseller Men Explain Things to Me and a newly released anthology of her essays about places from Detroit to Kyoto to the Arctic, The Encyclopedia of Trouble and Spaciousness.

Her most recent book is Recollections of My Nonexistence In 2008, Rebecca Solnit wrote an essay titled “ Men Explain Things to Me,” a biting critique of a condescending male behavior that drowns out and belittles women’s voices, that went viral. The term I do not know what inspired Rebecca Solnit — long respected as a writer and feminist (although I can’t say I’ve followed her work closely, of late, mostly because I find it a bit predictable and a bit dull) — to write about the “threat” posed by “trans women” to “cis women” last week.
